A few weeks ago, a couple we had originally met at a local home and garden show stopped by our Hartland design studio. They had just finished installing a stunning front paver patio at their Pewaukee home and were ready for the final piece: a fire feature that would feel as intentional as everything else they had built.

They knew exactly what they didn’t want. Not a generic aluminum fire table from a home improvement store. Not something that ships in a box and looks like everyone else’s patio. They wanted something that belonged on their specific patio — designed for it, not just placed on it.

Starting With the Space

Before we ever opened a catalog, we talked through the project. Where would the table sit? What was the sightline from the front door? How far was the nearest gas line? And what did the pavers look like — texture, color, undertone?

That last detail turned out to be the key to the whole design. Their pavers had a two-tone character — a warm grey base with a slightly cooler edge tone. They wanted the fire table to echo that palette, not match it exactly, but feel like it was drawn from the same source.

After walking through our GFRC fire table collection, they were immediately drawn to the Coastal Flow fire table — clean lines, subtle surface texture, and a profile that felt right for the space. But the standard dimensions didn’t work. Their patio layout called for a taller profile and a larger top surface for entertaining.

Built for Their Patio, Not a Showroom Floor

This is where working with a hands-on manufacturer makes a real difference. We adjusted the height, scaled up the tabletop, and built in a hidden propane tank access door — flush with the exterior, invisible at first glance, completely functional when you need it. No bulky tank cage. No exposed hose. Just clean lines from every angle.

The color specification took a couple of rounds. We pulled samples, held them against photos of the pavers in different lighting conditions, and landed on a two-tone finish — one tone for the tabletop, a contrasting hue for the base — that tied directly into what they had already built outside. When the fire table arrived, it looked like it had always been part of the plan.

Why GFRC Holds Up in Wisconsin

Lake Country isn’t an easy environment for outdoor materials. Freeze-thaw cycles, humidity swings, and heavy snow loads take a toll on anything not built for it. GFRC — Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete — handles those conditions differently than standard concrete. It’s lighter, which reduces thermal stress during temperature swings, and it resists water absorption far better than traditional cast concrete. Properly sealed, it holds up across decades of Wisconsin winters without surface damage or color degradation.

For a front patio piece that would be visible from the street and used year-round, that durability wasn’t optional — it was the baseline requirement.

The Build and the Reveal

Throughout fabrication we sent photo updates at each stage — the mold, the pour, the color application, the final finish. By the time the table was ready for delivery, they had watched it come together step by step. No surprises on arrival.

We also built them a custom matching planter in the same two-tone finish — a detail that wasn’t in the original scope but felt right once we saw how the project was coming together. Small things like that are easier when everything is made in-house.

After delivery, we handled the full setup: adjusted the flame controls, positioned the fire media, tested the burner system, and made sure everything was dialed in before we left. The fit was exactly what we had planned from the first conversation. The fire table extended their patio — it didn’t just sit on it.

Custom Fire Features in Hartland, WI

Every Castin Crete project starts with the same question: what does this space actually need? Not what photographs well, not what’s popular right now — what fits this patio, this home, this family?

If you’re finishing an outdoor space in Lake Country and want a fire feature built specifically for it, we’d love to start that conversation. Visit our showroom at N77 W31144 Hartman Court Ste. E, Hartland, WI 53029, or reach out to schedule a consultation.
