Some fire tables look right in a showroom photo. Others look right on a property. When those two things don’t match, you end up replacing a fire table that cost real money — and starting over.
That’s exactly what brought a couple near Lapham Peak in Delafield, Wisconsin to our Hartland studio. They didn’t need a fire table. They already had one. The problem was it didn’t live up to their property.
A Higher-End Table That Still Disappointed
Their previous fire table hadn’t come from a big box store. It had come from a higher-end outdoor furniture dealer and cost real money. They expected it to be something they could enjoy for years.
Less than three years later, it was already showing its age.
The wicker had begun to fade. The table was lightweight and flimsy — bump into it and the whole thing would move. It wasn’t substantial enough to comfortably put your feet up against, and the flame itself was underwhelming. There was nothing wrong with the idea of having a fire table on that deck. It was exactly where a fire table belonged. The problem was that this particular fire table didn’t feel like it belonged on this particular property.
They didn’t want to make the same purchase twice.
They Did Their Homework Before Coming In
Before visiting Castin Crete Designs, the homeowners had already been researching GFRC — Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete — and concrete fire tables specifically. They had looked at what was available online and learned that simply seeing “GFRC” in a product description doesn’t necessarily tell you how a fire table is made, how substantial it will feel, or how well it will fit a specific space.
Eventually, they came to our Hartland, Wisconsin showroom to see our concrete fire tables in person.
That’s when the process changed from shopping for another fire table to figuring out exactly what they wanted.
We pulled up chairs. They sat around different tables. They checked the heights. They put their knees underneath them. They felt the concrete, looked at the finishes, and experienced the weight and construction firsthand. Then we started talking about how they actually wanted to use their fire table.
Built Around How They Wanted to Use It
The homeowners wanted their new fire table to do more than produce a flame. They wanted a genuine conversation and gathering piece — a surface comfortable for setting down drinks, with enough height to allow knee clearance while sitting around it, and enough substance that you could put your feet up against it without the table moving.
One of our existing designs was close. But it wasn’t quite right.
So we modified it.
We increased the height and worked through the dimensions together until we arrived at a configuration that worked with their seating and the way they wanted to use their elevated deck. The proportions worked so well that the modified height eventually influenced a configuration we incorporated into our regular production.
Charcoal Concrete, Brass Hardware, and a Mahogany Door
Once the dimensions were right, we moved to the details.
The homeowners selected our Charcoal concrete finish with a very smooth, stone-like top surface. For the accent hardware, they chose our signature brass finish. That detail had particular significance because one of the homeowners is an artist. She saw the brass as more than functional hardware — against the dark charcoal concrete, it became an artistic element and part of the overall design of the table.
We incorporated a solid mahogany access door into the base, allowing the propane tank to remain concealed inside the fire table while still being easily accessible.
At the center of the table, we installed a 147,000 BTU match-lit burner — providing the substantial, natural-looking flame they had been missing with their previous table.
Their elevated backyard near Lapham Peak also experiences fairly consistent wind, so we added a glass wind guard to protect the flame and keep the fire enjoyable when the wind picks up.
Four Weeks From Order to Delivery in Delafield
Building their fire table took approximately four weeks. During that time, we kept them updated throughout the process and sent photos as the table moved through production. They could see it being made before it ever arrived at their home.
Once it was finished, we arranged delivery and brought the completed fire table to their property near Lapham Peak.
That’s when everything came together. The charcoal concrete, warm brass details, and mahogany access door worked beautifully with the home, the deck, and the natural surroundings. This time, the fire table looked like it belonged there.
The Best Part Came Later
The real ending to this project didn’t happen on delivery day.
It happened when we went back.
The homeowners told us how much they had been enjoying the fire table and how often it had become part of their evenings outside. They could sit around the fire, enjoy the backyard, and watch the sunset from their deck overlooking the wooded landscape where deer regularly wander through.
But then they told us something else.
Their neighbors had noticed it. They had complimented the fire table and wanted to know where it came from.
For us, that’s about as good as it gets. Because a great fire table isn’t simply something that produces heat — it becomes part of the outdoor space. It’s where people pull up a chair. It’s where drinks get set down and conversations stretch a little longer. And when someone walks onto the patio for the first time, it’s something they notice.
The homeowners originally came to us because the fire table they owned didn’t live up to their property. What they ended up with wasn’t simply a replacement. It was a fire table designed around their home, their outdoor space, and the way they wanted to enjoy it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a concrete fire table be customized for a specific patio or deck?
Yes. Castin Crete Designs can modify dimensions, height, concrete color, burner configuration, and other details to fit a particular outdoor space. For this Delafield project, we modified the table height specifically around the homeowners’ seating and how they wanted to use their elevated deck.
What type of concrete was used for this fire table?
This fire table was handcrafted using GFRC — Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete. The homeowners selected a Charcoal finish with a smooth, stone-like top surface and brass accent hardware.
Can the propane tank be hidden inside a concrete fire table?
Yes. This propane fire table was designed with the tank concealed inside the base. A solid mahogany access door provides easy access to the propane tank without affecting the finished appearance of the table.
How powerful is the burner in this fire table?
This Delafield fire table uses a 147,000 BTU match-lit burner. Burner size and output vary depending on the fire table design and the requirements of the installation.
Why add a glass wind guard to a fire table?
A glass wind guard protects the flame when a fire table is installed in an area that experiences regular wind. Because this Delafield property has an elevated outdoor area near Lapham Peak that can be exposed to consistent wind, a wind guard was an important part of this installation.
How long does a custom Castin Crete Designs fire table take to build?
This project took approximately four weeks from order to completed delivery in Delafield, WI. Production time varies depending on the fire table design, customization details, and current production schedule.
