Customers come to us after buying what was marketed as a “concrete fire table” online or at a big box store. A season or two later it’s cracked, chipped, or falling apart. They want something that actually lasts. We take the old one away, and another production-line piece ends up in the bin.
We’re not complaining. But it does raise a question worth asking before you spend your money:
Is that fire table actually concrete?
The answer, more often than not, is: not really.
The Word “Concrete” Doesn’t Mean What You Think It Means
On Amazon and in home improvement stores, “concrete” has become a styling descriptor more than a material specification. Sellers use it to describe the look — a gray, textured, matte surface — not necessarily the substance underneath.
What you’ll find in many of these tables:
- MgO board (magnesium oxide) with a concrete-look coating applied over the top
- Thin fiber cement panels — the same material used behind tile in wet areas, not in outdoor furniture
- Polyresin or fiberglass molded to mimic a concrete texture
- Very thin poured concrete with no fiber reinforcement — brittle, and the first hard freeze begins cracking it
None of these are concrete fire tables in any meaningful sense. They’re furniture with a concrete aesthetic. They look the part in a product photo and they perform fine in a climate-controlled showroom. Put them outside in Wisconsin for a winter or two, and you’ll find out what they’re actually made of.
What Real GFRC Actually Is
The concrete we use at CastinCrete is GFRC — Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete. That’s not a marketing term. It’s a specific, engineered material with a long track record in demanding applications: architectural building facades, commercial countertops, landscape features, and high-end outdoor furniture.
GFRC starts with a proprietary cement mix — in our case, a blend we’ve developed and refined over years of building outdoor tables in the upper Midwest. Into that mix goes alkali-resistant glass fiber, which does for the concrete what rebar does for a structural pour: it gives the material tensile strength so it doesn’t crack under stress, thermal cycling, or impact.
The difference between a properly formulated GFRC mix and a bag of concrete from a hardware store isn’t subtle. A well-made GFRC piece can absorb impact, handle freeze-thaw cycles without cracking, and hold its finish for years outdoors without any special maintenance. A thin concrete veneer over a cheap substrate — or an unreinforced pour — can’t do any of those things reliably.
Mix design matters enormously. The ratio of cement to aggregate, the water-to-cement ratio, the type and percentage of glass fiber — all of it affects how the finished piece performs. We hand-mix every batch to our own formula. We know exactly what’s in every table we build. That’s not something a production-line piece assembled in a warehouse can say.
What Ten-Plus Years of Wisconsin Winters Tells You
Here’s the simplest proof we can offer: our older tables sit outside year-round. No covers in winter. No covers in summer. Wisconsin freeze-thaw, temperature swings from well below zero to 95°F, UV, rain, snow, and ice — season after season.
They still look the way they did the day we delivered them.
That’s not luck. That’s what a properly formulated GFRC mix does when it’s built correctly. The material is dense enough that water doesn’t penetrate meaningfully. The glass fiber reinforcement holds it together through thermal expansion and contraction. The surface doesn’t delaminate because there’s no separate coating to delaminate from — the finish and the structure are the same material all the way through.
Compare that to the tables we pull out of backyards every season. Chipped edges. Hairline cracks that opened into real cracks. Coatings peeling away from whatever substrate was underneath. One or two winters and they’re done.
Five Questions to Ask Before You Buy Any Concrete Fire Table
Whether you’re looking at our tables or anyone else’s, here’s what we’d want to know:
1. Is it actually GFRC, or is it a concrete-look finish over something else?
Ask for the material specification. If the seller can’t tell you what the table is made of beyond “concrete,” that’s your answer right there.
2. What’s in the mix?
A real GFRC manufacturer can tell you they use alkali-resistant glass fiber and explain their formulation. A brand selling production-line pieces through a marketplace generally can’t — because they don’t know either.
3. How is it made?
Hand-mixed and hand-cast versus injection-molded or machine-poured is a meaningful difference. It tells you whether anyone with real knowledge touched this table between raw material and your backyard.
4. How does it perform in freeze-thaw conditions?
If the manufacturer is based somewhere warm and can’t speak to freeze-thaw performance from direct experience, take note. We’re in Hartland, Wisconsin. Our tables live outside here year-round. We know exactly what they handle.
5. What does the warranty actually cover?
Read it carefully. Many “limited lifetime warranties” on inexpensive fire tables exclude cracking, surface damage, and fading — the exact failure modes you’re most likely to see. A warranty that excludes what fails first isn’t much of a warranty.
Why the Price Difference Is Real
We’re not inexpensive, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise. A CastinCrete fire table is a significant purchase.
But when a customer asks why our tables cost what they cost, the answer isn’t a markup on a commodity product. It’s the material — real GFRC, proprietary mix, alkali-resistant glass fiber throughout. It’s the process — hand-mixed, hand-cast, finished by the people who built it. It’s what we’ve learned from years of building tables that live outside in one of the harder climates in the country. And it’s the fact that we stand behind what we make, because we made it, and we know exactly what’s in it.
Every table in the dumpster behind our shop was cheaper than ours. Every one.

If you’re shopping for a concrete fire table, the word “concrete” on a listing or a hang tag is not enough information. Ask what you’re actually buying. Ask how it was made. Ask whether it will be sitting in your backyard in ten years looking the way it does today.
