This is one of the most common questions we get — and the short answer is yes, you can use a gas fire table under a covered patio, but there are specific requirements around overhead clearance and ventilation that determine whether your setup qualifies. Get those right and a covered patio with a fire table is one of the best outdoor living setups you can have. Get them wrong and you’re creating a carbon monoxide risk that no ambiance is worth.

Here’s what actually matters.

First: Gas Only. Wood Is Not an Option Under Cover.

If you’re considering a wood-burning fire feature under a covered patio, stop there. Wood produces smoke, airborne embers, and unpredictable flame behavior that make it genuinely dangerous under any overhead structure. Embers can land on roofing, beams, or fabric. Smoke accumulates in enclosed spaces. There’s no safe way to do it.

Gas fire tables — propane or natural gas — burn clean with no sparks, no embers, and no smoke. That’s what makes the covered patio conversation possible at all.

Propane vs. Natural Gas Under Cover: There’s a Difference

Both propane and natural gas are viable options for covered patio use, but they behave differently in enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces, and that matters.

Propane is heavier than air. If there’s a leak or incomplete combustion, propane sinks and pools at ground level rather than dissipating upward. Under a covered structure with limited airflow, that’s a more significant hazard than in an open setting. NFPA 58 (the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code) specifically excludes portable propane appliances from covered spaces that don’t meet minimum ventilation standards.

Natural gas is lighter than air and rises. In a covered space with any upward ventilation, it dissipates more readily. For covered patio installations where you’re running a hardlined gas supply, natural gas is generally the better choice.

If you’re using a propane fire table under cover, the ventilation requirements discussed below become even more important — not optional.

Overhead Clearance: The Number That Matters Most

The standard minimum overhead clearance for a gas fire table to a non-combustible structure is 84 inches (7 feet), measured from the flame source to whatever is above it. For covered structures that include any combustible materials — wood beams, fabric panels, woven or lattice roofing — you should plan for more, often 10 feet or greater.

Higher-output burners push this number up. A fire table running at 60,000 BTUs or more generates significantly more heat than a standard residential unit, and that heat needs more room to dissipate before it reaches overhead materials. Always check the manufacturer specifications for your specific fire table — the minimum clearance listed there is not a guideline, it’s a safety threshold.

Ceiling fans and overhead light fixtures count toward this measurement. If you have a fan running above the fire table, you need clearance to the fan blades — not the ceiling.

Ventilation: The Non-Negotiable

Overhead clearance alone isn’t enough if the space doesn’t breathe. The real danger in a covered space isn’t flame — it’s carbon monoxide accumulation and heat buildup from inadequate airflow. Under ANSI Z21.97 / CSA 2.41 (the governing standard for outdoor gas appliances), enclosed or semi-enclosed installations must have sufficient ventilation to allow combustion gases to escape.

The practical requirements: at least two open sides providing cross-ventilation, and — for pergola-style structures — a minimum of 50% open overhead area. A space that’s open on two or more sides with a standard pergola roof (gaps between slats or rafters) will generally meet this. A space with solid walls on three or four sides and a ceiling fan overhead will not.

If you’re planning a permanent built-in installation in a more enclosed structure, a licensed contractor needs to evaluate the ventilation before anything gets installed. This isn’t a “figure it out as you go” situation.

How Different Covered Structures Compare

Open pergola — The most fire-table-friendly covered structure. Gaps in the overhead structure provide natural upward ventilation, and two or more open sides allow cross-airflow. As long as the 7-foot clearance is met and the overhead materials aren’t fabric or combustible softwoods sitting close to flame height, a pergola is a very workable setup.

Solid-roof patio cover — More restrictive. A solid roof traps heat and combustion gases more than a pergola. You need to be confident about lateral ventilation — open sides on at least two walls — and the ceiling height needs to comfortably exceed the 7-foot minimum. A solid-roof cover at 8 feet is marginal. At 10 feet or more with good cross-ventilation, it can work.

Screened porch or three-season room — Generally not suitable without modification. Screens are combustible, walls restrict airflow, and the enclosure creates exactly the conditions you need to avoid. This is a case where the setup needs a professional evaluation and likely some modification before a fire table belongs in it.

Gazebo — Depends almost entirely on the specific structure. An open-sided gazebo with a vented roof peak and 10+ feet of clearance may work. A fully enclosed gazebo with decorative siding panels is the wrong place for a fire table.

Horizontal Clearance and Surface

Beyond what’s above the fire table, you also need clearance from what’s around it. Gas fire tables require a minimum of 36 inches (3 feet) from combustible structures — walls, wooden posts, fences, or furniture that can’t be moved. Non-combustible materials like brick, stone, or concrete don’t carry the same requirement, though local codes may still specify minimums.

The surface under the fire table needs to be non-combustible: concrete, stone, tile, or pavers. If your covered patio has a wood deck surface and you’re placing a gas fire table on it, make sure the fire table is rated for deck installation — not all of them are. Properly certified gas fire tables (those with no downward heat output) can sit on composite or wood decking without creating a hazard at the surface level.

Local Codes and Permits

Everything above covers the general safety standards. Your local municipality may have additional requirements — or stricter ones. Permanent natural gas fire table installations almost always require a permit and inspection. Propane setups may or may not, depending on where you live. HOA rules add another layer in many neighborhoods.

Check before you build. A fire table that fails inspection can mean a removal order. Getting it permitted correctly from the start means you never have to think about it again.
